Oil spill forecasts

In an emergency response scenario, rapid access to weather data and trajectory forecasts is crucial for pre-emptive planning. MetraWeather’s Emergency Response Interface (ERI) has been designed to meet this need.

ERI is an online pre-emptive planning tool providing real-time oil spill trajectory forecasts. Set up for designated locations, a real-time forecast trajectory is available around the clock. Spill simulations are updated every six hours, with results displayed via the MetOceanView forecast portal. Emergency managers and responding crews can gain an instant understanding of the trajectory and dispersal characteristics, should an event occur.

Oil spill forecasts in MetOceanView

For any location, responders can enter the time, location and details of an oil spill or incident into ERI. Latest wind and current forecasts are used to predict trajectory at hourly increments out to a 7-day horizon, including interaction with the coast and beaching. Trajectory results are delivered within minutes.

ERI supports emergency response with:

  • Instant prediction of location
  • Depiction of likely outcome with hourly data
  • Available 24/7 via web access
  • Data distributed to response teams
  • International standards used

This service was used by New Zealand authorities following the grounding of the Rena cargo vessel in October 2011. ERI was the primary forecasting tool for oil spill modelling and trajectory of floating and submerged containers.

We can offer training and a call-out service for technical support during an emergency covering:

  • Real-time oil spill trajectory forecasts
  • Web-based tools
  • File download for use in GNOME or OILMAP
  • Can be adapted for SAR or other plume trajectory simulation

Our scientists regularly undertake scenario modelling of oil spill, produced water or drill cuttings dispersal, and can provide this service for any location worldwide.
