MetraWeather and MetOcean join forces for international growth

Today MetraWeather's parent company MetService acquired a 49% share in leading New Zealand oceanographic consultancy, MetOcean Solutions Ltd.

6 August 2013 -- Wellington, New Zealand

MetService chief executive Peter Lennox said, “Our international brand MetraWeather is already delivering New Zealand’s meteorological expertise globally to the media and energy industries. This investment boosts that export potential.”

MetOcean Solutions focuses on customised oceanographic forecasting and consultancy, specialised expertise that complements MetraWeather’s existing R&D capabilities.

“Joining forces with MetOcean helps us accelerate our development in the energy sector, and springboards us into the rapidly-growing marine sector – a potential market of over $10M – with established products and world-class expertise,” said Mr Lennox.

The NZ$3M MetOcean deal follows on the heels of several significant contract wins for MetraWeather. Last month the company has renewed its weather presentation services contract, worth over NZ$2M, with global broadcaster BBC.

In Australia, MetraWeather is a market leader in weather risk management for energy and resources, and in weather presentation for commercial broadcasters. The company’s expansion into Asia also saw it nominated as a finalist in the HSBC NZCTA China Business Awards in May.

James Luffman, MetraWeather general manager sales for Australia and New Zealand, attributes this success to the way MetraWeather approaches science and industry knowledge.

“Like MetOcean, our offering is differentiated by both our level of scientific rigour, and by our genuine knowledge of our customer’s industry environment. We aim that our people are experts in both spheres.”

MetraWeather’s ‘powerful weather intelligence’ positioning and international sales & marketing expertise create the perfect avenue to bring MetOcean products to global markets.

“This investment shows our confidence in the quality and growth potential of MetOcean’s business,” said Luffman.
