Weather Data Analytics

Energy Analytics

MetraWeather’s world-leading enhanced probability distribution (ePD) forecasts are used as key inputs for TESLA Forecast’s Demand Modelling Services. ePD forecasts are verified monthly and consistently outperform all comparison forecast models, including ECMWF. Likewise, TESLA Forecast regularly verifies their models for prediction load/demand.

Retail Analytics

Weather-driven analytics and world-leading forecasts from MetraWeather provide quantitative information on how temperature and rainfall anomalies drive consumer demand. That is, what sales increase/decrease (in percentage terms) can be anticipated per 1 degree temperature anomaly. This allows for evidence based business decisions for Data, Operations, Marketing and Finance teams.

  • Better matching of supply and demand for weather sensitive product lines

    • reduce inventory holding costs and shrinkage of perishables

    • capture surplus during high demand periods

    • prevent loss of customers due to stock-outs

    • Inform buying and stock movement decisions

  • Programmatic weather-driven advertising campaigns ahead of favourable weather conditions for key product lines

  • Improved sales forecasts on daily, weekly and monthly time scales

Expert Consultancy

MetraWeather has an experienced team of World Meteorological Organization Qualified (BiP-M) Meteorologists, with specialist industry knowledge across energy, marine, retail, agricultural and insurance sectors. These dedicated meteorological professionals understand your business needs, so that their briefings and reports are tailored to provide the insights you need for evidence based decision-making.

Core services include:

  • Metra Notes weekday briefing service for the Energy Sector, highlighting upcoming weather-driven impacts on energy supply and demand

  • Medium (4-Week) and Long Range (6-Month) briefing services, backed up with world class modelling, to inform you of future risks and opportunities for your business

  • Marine briefing services to highlight risks to operations and safety, including squall warnings

  • Expert post-event reports for resolving insurance disputes or legal disputes involving the weather

Weather & Ocean Modelling

Our ocean modelling division, MetOcean Solutions, specialises in high resolution wave modelling across the globe, to assist with safe and efficient marine operations.

Port operators, construction companies, offshore wind farms and offshore oil & gas companies all rely on accurate forecasts for sea, swell, wave height, wave period and wave direction. Hydrodynamic models are provided in some cases to resolve water levels, currents and tides, which can also interact with local wave conditions.

Long wave (infragravity wave) forecasts are also a specialist service provided to ports. For over 15 years, MetOcean Solutions has been providing specialist services to help port operators better manage long wave problems. Having studied long waves at more than 35 locations worldwide, our science team has experience with every type of long wave-affected port, and has developed a range of effective forecasting solutions.

We know that long waves have a particular range of periods for a given berth, and some of those periods can directly excite a moored ship – creating the problematic surge. Ship response on the mooring is directly correlated to long wave height. By forecasting the long wave height for the correct period range, a very good proxy for the excitation potential can be produced. This is a highly effective technique that has been well established and is relied upon by ports throughout New Zealand and Australia.

Long waves are generated during the arrival of swell waves at the coast. Using numerical models, calibrated with measured data to characterise the wave climate both inside and outside harbours, the long wave surge forecast provides a clear guide for development of problem surging conditions.

Lightning & Safety

MetraWeather partners with TOA Systems to provide real time lightning information and alerting solutions to customers across Australia, New Zealand, Oceania and Asia. TOA Systems’ Lightning Network detects and triangulates the position of lightning events, allowing for real time alerting of threats to life and infrastructure.

Lightning kills hundreds of people annually, and provides a real threat to workers in aviation, mining and construction sectors, as well as any other outdoor field crews. Lightning can also hit key energy infrastructure, including transmission & distribution lines, and wind turbines. Knowing the cause and location of faults caused by lightning provides a huge time saving to energy network operators. Lightning information can also be used to check weather-related insurance claims or verify the ignition point of fires.

The TOA Systems’ Lightning Network in Australia (previously known as GPATS) has been in operation since the late 1990s, so it offers the most comprehensive lightning climatology for the nation. This is particularly useful when looking at long term thunderstorm trends, or areas that are most prone to lightning.
